Laser printing is not
particularly kind to the environment - but I can do a lot to lessen the harm it
causes by recycling toner cartridges and using an up to date printer that
minimises environmental damage. My printer is manufactured by Konica
Minolta who have recently made steps (with their 'Clean Planet Program') to
reduce the amount of plastic materials used in the housing of their printers and
toner cartridges. They have also changed to polymer toner which removes
the need for oil rollers and fuser units - two components which are primarily
made of plastic and need to be regularly replaced.
One way to counterbalance the
harmful emissions from printing, and from 21st Century living in general, is to
offset your carbon usage. The website
www.climatecare.org has a carbon calculator to work out how much CO2
you produce, depending on your lifestyle. It then calculates the
amount of money it would take to offset your emissions. Climate Care
channels your donation into various environmental projects throughout the world
(such as tree planting schemes) which should help to counteract the damage that
modern living inflicts on the environment. |
